Mumbai and the time narrative

I was in Delhi a couple of weeks ago – and tweeted that Delhi felt like a “space” city, while cities like Mumbai and other ‘great cities’ feel like “time” cities.

On Friday I left work late, and my commute, which otherwise takes me 1hr45m on average, took me just 16 minutes.

That’s the other thing about Mumbai.

You go to any other city in India, and ask how far away something is, they’ll tell you “5km” or “10km” or “20km”. Not Mumbai. In Mumbai, you ask how far away something is, and they’ll answer in minutes. How far is Lower Parel? 1.5 hours if it’s peak hour. 1 hour on average. 15 minutes at midnight. How far away is Nariman Point? 2 hours if it’s peak hour. 1.5 hours on average. 30 minutes at midnight.
